Prestigious British designer, Ron Arad, devised 10 LAYERS during his recent visit to Cosentino’s factory in Almeria (Spain).
Ron Arad: “The idea for 10 LAYERS came in the extraordinary plant of Cosentino. When you look at the state of the art production of Dekton® and Silestone®, although you are there for a completely different purpose – cladding a tower, you can’t help but think ‘what else can we do with this magical material? We want to do something where we enjoy the material in a different way.”
I’ve done a ping pong table made of stainless steel and bronze, not a flat one, but one with a curved belly in its length. The idea was to slow the game down and make the rallies longer. The layered stone and the CNC milling allows us to make it curved in all directions, ie. a huge concave surface (convex in its underbelly) made of 10 different coloured layers. When you machine away the surfaces, the flat layers become perfect circles in sharp, contrasting colours.”
10 Silestone® slabs out of four different colours: Iconic White (white hue), Kensho (light grey), Cemento Spa (dark grey) and Negro Tebas (black hue) create the playground and net of this genuine and unprecedented design by Ron Arad. The designer interprets Silestone® quartz surfaces from a completely unexpected perspective creating a ping pong table that interacts in a new way with the players.
The company Cuellar Arquitectura del Mármol has done the fabrication works for this peculiar ping pong table. Cuellar is specialized in cut-to-size work for natural Stone and similar materials.
